  • Acupuncture A Traditional Chinese Therapy

Acupuncture, is a natural healing process that possibly originated in China many thousands of years ago, and has since been adopted by many cultures as an effective method of ridding the body of many ailments. The origin of acupuncture is uncertain, even though archeologists have discovered stone acupuncture needles in Mongolia that date back more than 5,000 years.

Stone acupuncture needles were called Bian Stones and were refined from a particular type of stone, rich in calcium, phosphorus and iron, as well as several other minerals. There is evidence that bronze needles were also used from about 1,000 B.C., however stone needles were mostly used until the advent of gold and silver needles in the fourth or early fifth century B.C..

Acupuncture TherapyModern acupuncture needles are made from stainless steel and are extremely fine, ranging from 0.12 millimeter in diameter. Disposable stainless steel filiform needles are mostly used these days although gold or silver needles are still available. The Chinese had nine different types of needles that they used to treat a variety of complaints and modern practitioners still use several different types of needles.

During an acupuncture therapy session, needles are inserted into specific acupoints of the body, which are situated over meridians within the body that pass through the vital organs on their journey to the body's extremities. There are twelve major meridians and several minor meridians that channel energy throughout the body, keeping it in balance. When the body suffers from ailments, aches or pains then it's balance can be restored by inserting needles into the acupuncture points that relate to the affected area of the body. This process effectively frees the meridian channels of any obstruction allowing energy to circulate freely, keeping the body in balance.

The Chinese believe the body to be controlled by it's organs through meridians or channels in our body that allowed energy to circulate freely thus keeping the body in balance and healthy. This energy is known as Qi and when a channel becomes blocked Qi cannot flow freely, which causes pain or a physical ailment. A trained acupuncturist can determine the meridian that is blocked and where to insert the needles that will relieve the channel and cause Qi to flow freely.

A physical ailment is indicated by pain, and pain is caused by a blockage in a meridian channel that restricts the flow of energy to parts of the body. Acupuncture is seen as an effective means to quickly unblock the meridian and get energy flowing again. This process allows the affected area of the body to heal and stop the pain.

Acupuncture is extremely effective in the fast relief of lower back pain, sciatica and arthritis as well as most other common ailments. Acupuncture is a natural remedy that is quite often used in conjunction with natural herbal medicines.
